Musical Mondays – Supergirl – the movie – Jerry Goldsmith

Even the late great Jerry Goldsmith took a shot at crafting a superhero movie score in the form of Supergirl – a lackluster film starring Helen Slater, Faye Dunaway, Peter O’Toole, Mia Farrow and…others.

If you havent seen it, this is the synopsis: “After losing a powerful orb, Kara, Superman’s cousin, comes to Earth to retrieve it and instead finds herself up against a wicked witch.” yeah, not exactly true to the source…

Goldsmith’s main theme, at least, isnt so bad…

there’s even a little nod to her cousin, and John Williams’ theme…

the action music has that classic ’80s Goldsmith flair…

and of course, there’s the Grand Finale…

Overall, the music is more enjoyable than the movie itself…but at the time, as a kid…Helen Slater looked mighty fine in that costume, so that made it OK by me…

Musical Mondays – Batman – Danny Elfman

I’ll admit, when this movie was first being released, i didnt know who Danny Elfman was. I knew Williams, and Silvestri, and Horner, and Goldsmith…but this guy…from the band Oingo Boingo?

Well, turns out not only was he good, he was fantastic…composing the second most iconic superhero theme of all time for Tim Burton’s Batman, circa 1989.

The tone fit the film and the character perfectly. Dark and Heroic…

even epic at times…

and his music for the Joker, equally perfect..

this is the only score to come close to matching John Williams and his compositions for Superman.

Musical Mondays – Superman: The Movie – John Williams

John Williams – the Masetro. His Superman Theme – Iconic.

I popped this into the CD player today (yes, i still have to use CDs in my SUV) and was quickly reminded why this is, by far, the best superhero theme ever composed. No one, to this day, composes music like this.

The entire score is just wonderful, so full of thematic beauty and romanticism. And the main theme is instantly recognizable.

This a must have for any soundtrack enthusiast. And if you have a Superhero playlist like me, more than a few of these tracks must be included.

Ohhhh that moment at 7 min 50 secs into “The Fortress of Solitude”!!!

Musical Mondays – Eggsy is Back – Kingsman: The Golden Circle soundtrack…

OK, I am trying to get back into a schedule of regular posting content, and Monday’s seemed like a good day for some music. Let’s kick things off with Henry Jackman’s opening to Kingsman: The Golden Circle: “Eggsy is Back”.

I think I was looking forward more to the music of this film than the film itself. And a piece like this is why…Bagpipes, to the tune of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Road” (I didnt realize this on first listening, it hit me later in the album) followed by that fantastic Kingsman Theme. And then the action kicks in…this is just fun stuff!

Destiny: The Musical Journey – Part 1

Welcome to another Musical Monday! Today, keeping with the Destiny theme, we are going to present some highlights from the video game soundtrack to Bungie’s original Destiny.

I’ll admit, this one sat in my music collection for a while before i finally gave it a good listening too. And, I wish i had listened to it earlier! There is some great music here.

Composed and directed by Martin O’Donnell, co-written by Michael Salvatori and C. Paul Johnson, with contributions and input from famed Beatles member Paul McCartney.

You get a mix of intense Action music, soft and enchanting pieces, epic Boss Fights and the solemn and heroic. It’s all here. Like with many soundtracks, not all are gems…but there is a lot of really good stuff here to listen to, especially if you are a fan of the game…

The soundtrack for the first half of Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season is set to be released digitally on December 15. Composed by Emmy Award-winner Jeff Russo, the soundtrack will be distributed by Lakeshore Records, with pre-sales beginning this Friday, December 8.

Additionally, the soundtrack will be available as a physical CD and vinyl release in early 2018.

“Grand, glorious, hopeful, heartbreaking, intimate, bittersweet, tense, soaring, surprising. Over 51 years, in its many iterations, there’s been no shortage of adjectives to describe the music of Star Trek,” said co-creator Alex Kurtzman in a press release. “On the other hand, the list of composers capable of capturing them all is short, and this is where Jeff Russo comes in. Jeff manages to hold each note in beautiful balance, evoking the nostalgia of Alexander Courage’s original theme while scoring Discovery with his own unique ear and heart. We’re lucky to have him, and we hope you’ll love his music as much as we do.”
